Live & Kicking: Thursday 31st March 2011
Local blues/pop/rock outfit the Paul Gibbard band are playing at the tap and Spile on Hungate, Lincoln on Friday evening. Paul has been around for a few years playing his own material generally spiced up with a bran tub of old 60’s & Mod RnB material. Music is from around 8:30 – free entry!
On Saturday night guitarist, songwriter, rock ‘n roll troubadour and my dear old friend, Dave Sharp will be playing an acoustic set at the Jolly Brewer. Salford born Dave is possibly best known for his work as guitarist and co-writer with seminal Welsh outfit The Alarm. Dave has also spent a bit of time working over the years as ‘shotgun’ guitarist with several acts including Stiff Little Fingers. Following the shock departure of Alarm singer Mike Peters at the end of a lengthy tour back in 1991 Dave re-located, almost immediately, to America where he spent the next ten or so years developing his own style while taking part in many large events including the legendary Farm Aid concerts and also playing in front of an audience of over 25,000 in New York’s central Park to celebrate what would have been the 80th birthday of Woody Gutherie. The show will start around 9am and entry is free!
On the mention of Stiff Little Fingers, they will be playing over in Nottingham as the final date on their recent UK ‘St Patrix’ tour at Rock City. Another fine British band now based in cities across the USA (Chicago, New York & LA) SLF are running up to the end of one of their bi-annual UK trips which has taken them all the way from a “hometown” opening gig at Belfast’s Ulster Hall back at the beginning of March all the way through to Saturday’s Nottingham show then back to the ‘States for a string of festival appearances there. Tickets are on sale through the venue through www.rock-city.co.uk.
Another fine evening of acoustic music, although possibly a little more boisterous than Sharpies gig over at the Brewer sees the Hooleys return to the Tap & Spile on Saturday night. This popular Lincoln outfit has a great reputation for dragging the party from the kitchen to the pub and back again. So make sure you drag yourselves down to the Tap on Saturday early enough to negotiate a table edge and bar space to enjoy the evening from! I did hear from first had that you couldn’t even get into the tap on St Patrick’s night unless you were there before half eight – so be warned!
The first (of many no doubt!) semi-finals of the current Lincoln battle of the Bands will take place this Saturday night upstairs at the Duke of Wellington on Lincoln’s Broadgate. The bands taking part in this week’s semis include Fly Lazarus Fly and Towering heights. The show starts at 7pm with a small admission charge and if rock and ‘indie’ is your taste get along and support a couple of fine new local bands.
