On Friday night local acoustic (semi) combo The Treehouse will be cramming themselves into the Tap & Spile on Hungate (Lincoln). This week they will be brining to town Cambridge-based acoustic outfit Flaming June who they have recently met up and supported on one of their regular forays out of town flying the Treehouse flag. The evening will kick off around 8:30 and, of course, good ales and free entry are guaranteed to make it a fine evening for one and all.
Over in Skegness on Friday night American R’nB and Soul legends Gary U.S. Bonds and ex-Drifter Ben E King will bring their ‘Great American Songbook Tour’ to the Embassy Theatre on Grand Parade (PE25 2UG). Surrounding themselves with a knockout band made up from regular sidemen from the bands of Van Morrison, Eric Clapton, Steve Winwood, Jeff Beck and others, this promises to be an exceptional night of some of the greatest soul songs ever written and performed by some of music’s most iconic performers. Gary U.S. Bonds will be hosting the show as well as singing some of his famous hits like New Orleans and Quarter to Three along with a wide selection of standards. The teaming up with the legendary Ben E King for what promises to be one of the most eagerly anticipated soul shows to hit the county in a long time. Totally depending on personal tastes Saturday night brings musical memories of a different sort to the area. “Rollermania” is a musical trip through all things tartan and baggy trousers featuring one-time Bay City Rollers front-man Les McKeown. The venue is the vast but seriously underused Meres Leisure Centre on Trent Road in Grantham and the show starts from 7:30pm.
One this trip back in time, the singer from one of the biggest pop sensations of the 1970s, will be hosting an evening of hit songs and nostalgia. With over 300 million albums sold worldwide. McKeown, was the original voice on every one of the Bay City Rollers hits and Saturday night’s show will see Les performing some of the songs that influenced him whilst growing up and the show is topped off with the big hits of the Bay City Rollers including Remember, All Of Me Loves All Of You and the biggest selling song of 1975 Bye Bye Baby.
Other shows in the area this week include The Levellers on their 20th anniversary tour who will be supported by The Wonderstuff at the Engine Shed on Sunday – 0844 8888766. But next Wednesday those ‘Men In Black’ (The Stranglers) return to Rock City with an excellent supporting line-up in the shape of the ever-manic national treasure who is Wilko Johnson.
